Overview:
aeroIT: Aviation Information Technology (Third Edition) is an information technology (IT) course designed for aviation professionals with a wide range of knowledge or skill. It covers the fundamental skills and basic concepts required to install, configure, and troubleshoot aeroIT networks and understand network management best practices.
If your job duties include network troubleshooting, installation, or maintenance, or if you are preparing for any type of network-related career in the aviation field, this course provides the background knowledge and skills you will need to be successful.
Course Objectives:
In this course, you will learn and describe the major networking technologies, systems, skills, and tools as they apply to aircraft networking and Internet connectivity.
You will:
- Explore the fundamentals of aircraft Internet and ACARS communication.
- Explore fundamentals of computer networking.
- Identify network addressing.
- Explore testing network connectivity.
- Identify important aspects of network implementation.
- Identify common networking configurations, and how they're used to sub-divide networks.
- Identify two networking models regarding TCP/IP network implementation.
- Identify the major services deployed on TCP/IP networks.
- Identify the components of a remote network implementation.
- Identify the key issues and methods to secure systems on a network.
- Identify the major issues and technologies in network security.
- Identify the common components and characteristics of Iridium, Inmarsat, Viasat, Intelsat, and Gogo connectivity systems.
- Identify common aircraft network configurations.
- Identify the tools available for troubleshooting connectivity issues.
- Identify how to troubleshoot common SATCOM issues.
- Identify common aircraft networking issues and identify troubleshooting techniques to resolve them.
- Identify how to manage the bandwidth of an available Internet connection.
Target Student:
This course is designed for professionals in the aviation field with varied degrees of experience in regards to aeroIT, including but not limited to:
- Novice aeroIT professionals who require a foundation of knowledge and skills regarding networking and Internet connectivity, especially as they apply to the aircraft cabin.
- Experienced aeroIT professionals who have a foundation of field experience but need or want to advance their knowledge or skills, perhaps to achieve advanced certification or accreditation.
- Management professionals in the aviation field who need or want to gain a better understanding of what their aeroIT professionals undertake on a daily basis.
Prerequisites:
To ensure your success, it is recommended that you have a knowledge of IT networking. Two to three years of work experience in IT networking or avionics is suggested.
Course-specific Technical Requirements
Hardware:
This course requires one computer for each student, one computer for the instructor, and a minimum of one Wireless Access Point and router with Internet access. Recommendations for each computer (Windows® or macOS®) are:
- 1.4 gigahertz (GHz) (single 64-bit) processor or 1.3 GHz (dual core) processor or above.
- 4 gigabyte (GB) of RAM or greater.
- 320 GB hard disk or larger.
- Super VGA (SVGA) or higher resolution monitor capable of a screen resolution of at least 1,024 x 768 pixels, with at least a 256-color display, and a video adapter with at least 64 MB of memory.
- A mouse or other pointing device.
- Network Interface Card (NIC) and network cabling.
- If a NIC is not available, a network adapter (USB to RJ45) and cabling.
- A projection system for the instructor.
- Internet access.
Mobile hardware:
- Google Android™-equipped mobile hardware.
- Apple® iOS-equipped mobile hardware.
Software:
Windows software required:
- Microsoft® Windows® 95 or higher operating system.
- Microsoft Windows Command Prompt (cmd.exe).
macOS® software required:
- macOS Terminal command-line application.
